'This summer Becta published its long-awaited report laying out functional specifications for learning platforms. It's a difficult task, given that a learning platform is an amalgam of content provision/resources and the learner's own stuff, such as an e-portfolio.The report doesn't include virtual learning environment-type aspects such as an information management system, but clearly any learning platform solution must be able to integrate with a school's existing management system.'

The e-Strategy also has the following priorities: an integrated online information service for all citizens; integrated online personal support for children and learners; a collaborative approach to transforming teaching and learning.

An e-portfolio is an electronic version of the portfolio of evidence that learners produce.The advantage of e-portfolios is that they can be updated and transferred between institutions more readily that traditional portfolios. The OCR has been developing e-portfolios for the sector.

The job of the principal or any educational leader has become increasingly complex and constrained. Principals find themselves locked in with less and less room to maneuver.
